Welcome to our new home! As we get each of our rooms set up I’m going to be taking you all on a virtual tour of our space! I’m going to share what it looked like when we bought it, the work we put into it, and the touches we’ve added to make it truly ours.
I’m such a believer that the kitchen is the heart of the home. My favorite time of every day is when Jesse and I get home from work and spend time cooking in the kitchen, talking about all of the things that happened during our day. We have some of our deepest heart-to-heart talks over a sizzling pan in our kitchen. The kitchen fills our souls and fills our bellies.
When we first looked at this house my brain exploded with so many ideas for this space! I knew right away that I wanted to brighten up this room to make it brighter and more inviting. However, I had zero experience in upgrading kitchens. Fortunately, you can learn how to do just about anything from YouTube.
Below are pictures of our kitchen when we first moved in.
My first goal was to get rid of that tan color! (YIKES) I went with a light gray paint for the walls, to help open the space up a bit. Then I did a super simple subway tile sticky backsplash, which really brightened the under-cabinet area up a bunch! Next, I resurfaced the countertops with a countertop paint. After all of that was finished I realized that the cabinets were actually an off-white, not a true white, so I did a fresh coat of bright white for the cabinets.
I added pops of yellow and lemons to brighten it up even more! The sun shines through these windows and I get the biggest smile on my face when I walk into this room every morning!
We’ll be adding some hanging plants over the sink as soon as I find what I’m looking for, but I love how it’s all come together! Eventually we really want to replace the cabinets/counters completely, but that’s a bigger project than we can bite off at the moment! For now, these cheap + easy updates have completely transformed this space and I couldn’t love it more!
(I also spent approximately 157965 hours watching YouTube videos about how to paint, tile, spackle, caulk, etc..)

Lessons Learned:
The sticky tile is a little bit picky about cold walls. A friend of mine used these and never had an issue with the tiles peeling, but our walls are concrete and they get cold at night and the edges peel up. I got a little tube of super glue and put little drops of glue on the places that peeled up and now they’re great!
I took our cabinet fronts down to paint them and put them on brown craft paper. I painted one side, waited 30 minutes and flipped them over to paint the other side. They weren’t completely dry so they stuck to the paper and the paint dried to the craft paper and peeled off when I picked them up so I had to redo a few of them. Patience is a virtue.
