After shooting weddings all over Pennsylvania, I can tell you — golden hour is the real deal.
It’s that stretch of time just before sunset when everything softens. The light gets warm and glowy, skin tones look incredible, and the whole day just feels a little more magical. And when you’re in the right spot? That light takes your portraits to another level.
Not every venue is built for golden hour, though. Some catch the light just right, open fields, reflective water, wide views. If golden hour portraits are important to you (and they should be), these are the venues I recommend again and again.
Why Golden Hour Matters for Your Wedding Photos
There’s a reason photographers obsess over golden hour, and it’s not just because the light is pretty.
Golden hour gives you soft, flattering light that makes skin tones glow and details pop. It brings out the texture in your dress, the sparkle in your eyes, the emotion in a simple glance.
It’s especially powerful in natural settings (e.g. fields, gardens, vineyards, lakes) where the light can bounce, wrap, and linger just long enough to create photos that feel timeless and cinematic.

For a lot of couples, these end up being their favorite portraits of the entire day. It’s not just about how they look, it’s about how they feel.
What Makes a Venue Perfect for Golden Hour Photos?
Golden hour is all about the light, so the space you’re in matters more than you might think.
The best venues usually have:
- Open views (ideally west-facing) so the sun doesn’t disappear too early
- Natural textures like fields, vines, stone, or tall grasses that catch that glow just right
- Reflective elements like water, glass, or even pale buildings that bounce light beautifully
- A little flexibility in the wedding timeline so we can step out for portraits without stressing
It doesn’t have to be complicated, just a space that works with the light, not against it.

Tips for Capturing Golden Hour at Your Wedding
You don’t need a complicated timeline or a massive break in the day to make golden hour portraits happen. Just a little planning and the right window of time.
Here’s what I always recommend:
- Block off 10-15 minutes around sunset for portraits. That’s usually all we need to make some serious magic happen.
- Plan to sneak away during cocktail hour. It’s low-pressure, you’ve had a moment to breathe, and the light is usually perfect.
- Trust your photographer (hi, me 👋) to watch the light and let you know the best time to step out. Sometimes it’s earlier, sometimes it’s later — we’ll read the sky so you don’t have to.
- Build in a little buffer time just in case things run late. Even 10 extra minutes can make the difference between golden glow and missed opportunity.

Golden Hour Photos FAQ
Do I need to choose a venue that faces west for golden hour photos?
West-facing views are ideal because that’s where the sun sets, but it’s not the only factor. What really matters is how open the space is. Venues with wide fields, hills, water, or even reflective architecture can catch the glow beautifully, even if they aren’t perfectly west-facing.
What if the venue doesn’t have great sunset views, should we skip golden hour photos?
Not at all. If your venue isn’t known for epic sunsets, we can still find little nooks with soft, directional light like stone walls, tree-lined paths, or open spots nearby. It’s all about how the light hits, not just where it sets.
Do you help us figure out golden hour timing at our venue?
Definitely. Once you book your venue and we know your date, I’ll calculate exactly when golden hour hits and help build it into your timeline, so it feels effortless and never rushed. Curious what that looks like in action? Check out real wedding day timeline examples.
