Here’s what I always recommend:

• Block off 10-15 minutes around sunset for portraits. That’s usually all we need to make some serious magic happen.
  
• Plan to sneak away during cocktail hour. It’s low-pressure, you’ve had a moment to breathe, and the light is usually perfect.
  
• Trust your photographer (hi, me 👋) to watch the light and let you know the best time to step out. Sometimes it’s earlier, sometimes it’s later — we’ll read the sky so you don’t have to.
  
• Build in a little buffer time just in case things run late. Even 10 extra minutes can make the difference between golden glow and missed opportunity.

West-facing views are ideal because that’s where the sun sets, but it’s not the only factor. What really matters is how open the space is. Venues with wide fields, hills, water, or even reflective architecture can catch the glow beautifully, even if they aren’t perfectly west-facing.

What if the venue doesn’t have great sunset views, should we skip golden hour photos?

Not at all. If your venue isn’t known for epic sunsets, we can still find little nooks with soft, directional light like stone walls, tree-lined paths, or open spots nearby. It’s all about how the light hits, not just where it sets.
