Family Pictures: Part 1 – Outfit Planning

A while back I did a poll on my Instagram page trying to get a grasp on why so many people don’t do family pictures regularly. The most popular answer I got back was: WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR! So I’m here to help with that! I’m starting this series of family pictures blog posts with outfit planning to help get you started on the right track!

LET’S START OUT WITH SOME SEASONAL TIPS

SPRING:
Top priority: Flexibility and clothes that can get wet. Spring is wet so maybe incorporate some cute rain boots, a clear umbrella incase it’s raining. Light colors help hide rain spots!

SUMMER:
Top priority: lightweight clothing!! If you’re planning your family session for mid summer, lightweight, light colored clothing is a MUST. Light colors will help hide sweat marks.

FALL:
Top priority: Seasonal awareness. Some fall seasons it’s 80 degrees until Thanksgiving, other fall seasons we get 3 feet of snow in October! I feel like it flipflops from year to year. Being super aware of what the weather will be like on the day of your session will be so helpful this time of year!
Example: If it’s going to be super warm for your session but you still want darker fall tones in your pictures, switch the kiddos from heavy pants or tights to fall color toned skirts or dresses to allow for air flow so they don’t get too hot!

WINTER:
Top priority: Functional warmth. Think cute coats and warm boots and mittens! Kids seem to be able to play in the snow for hours, but the second you try to get them to go out for pictures, they’re FREEZING!! Adding hand and foot warmers in the boots and mittens will get earn you a few extra minutes of warmth!

Next up, let’s talk about planning your outfits:

1: PICK A COLOR SCHEME.
Light, neutral colors are always a favorite of mine.

2. IF YOU’RE ADDING A PATTERN, PICK ONE PERSON TO WEAR A PATTERN.
More than one pattern has the tendency to make your images look busy. If you’re going to add a pattern, add only one!

3. ACCESSORIZE!
Adding in things like hats or denim jackets add layers and gives both adults and kids something to touch and hold during posing.

4. COLORS TO AVOID:
– Reds and Neons – if you lovelovelove red, go right ahead and wear it! However, reds and neon colors have a tendency of reflecting back up on your skin and making skin tones appear discolored.
