It’s that time of year when we start setting dates for all of our spring/summer/fall engagement sessions, so it seems like the perfect time to get you prepared for you session!
Now that you’ve made some of your biggest decisions, (date, venue, photographer), it’s time to do some of the fun stuff, like your engagement session!
Why are engagement sessions important?
We include engagement sessions for all of our couples because I truly believe that it’s a vital part of the wedding process! During your engagement session you’ll get the chance to see how we work, and we’ll get the opportunity to know you and how you two interact as a couple. By the time your session is over you’ll know how we handle lighting and posing. We’ll arrive on your wedding day knowing exactly how you tow interact, what your best poses are and the best way to get genuine emotion from you!
When should we schedule our session?
You can schedule your engagement session anytime before your wedding day! We normally suggest at least 3-6 months before the big day to avoid stress. We dedicate our weekends to weddings, so we typically shoot our engagement sessions on weekdays, about an hour and a half before sunset or right at sunrise.
Where should our session be?
As you start to plan for your engagement session, you’ll need to start brainstorming location ideas! We love when our couples pick a location that is special or sentimental to them in some way. Maybe the place you first met, where you had your first date, or where you got engaged! If you can’t think of any specific place, I can help you pick a location! As long as the light is great, I can make any location look great!! I’ve shot on farms, college campuses, downtown alleys and ice cream shops!
What should we wear?!
This is probably the most common question I get asked when it comes to engagement session planning. I know it can be a little overwhelming planning this part so here are a few tips!
1. Don’t try to match! – When you’re picking outfits, make sure you coordinate, but you don’t need to wear the exact same colors!
2. Don’t be afraid to be bold! – Accessorize with scarves, bold necklaces, fun shoes, etc. Make it your own!
3. Be conscious of patterns! – Most patterns are totally okay! Graphics aren’t favorable for portraits (graphic tees, etc.).
4. Dress it up! – When in doubt, go formal! This is a once in a lifetime thing, so don’t be scared to wear a suit and elegant dress!
TOP PRIORITY: Be comfortable in whatever you decide to wear! If you wear something that you don’t feel 100% confident in it will most definitely show in your images! You don’t want to be worried about sucking in or making sure your arms look great at every angle during your session! You want to be able to relax and enjoy this time together!
A lot of our couples make a date night of it! This is also a great chance to do your trial for your wedding hair and makeup! You can use this session to make sure you like the way your hair and makeup photographs and holds up over several hours!
